Faced with an urban renewal plan that would have demolished the Market, the citizens of Seattle voted overwhelmingly to save and preserve Pike Place Market. As a project architect for G.R. Bartholick, Richard Cardwell played a major role in the restoration and renovation design of the core Market buildings and was responsible for the project from conceptual design through construction. Upon completion of the restoration and renovation, Cardwell Architects was formed and continued working on the Market, designing the historic retail businesses on the Main Arcade, including Delaurenti's Italian Market, Pure Food Fish, the Athenian Inn, and the high vegetable stalls.
